Republican National Committee officials, along with GA Governor Brian Kemp, will tour Savannah today as a potential site for President Donald Trump’s nominating convention.

Skidaway Island Democrats strongly opposes the idea and urges members and allies to make their disapproval known to Savannah Mayor Van Johnson by phone at (912) 651-6444 or via email to MayorJohnson@savannahga.gov and Governor Brian Kemp at (404) 656-1776, georgia.governor@gov.state.ga.us.

According to political reporter Greg Bluestein, writing today in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “The RNC plans to scout the coastal Georgia city after Trump and national Republicans decided to shift most convention proceedings out of Charlotte.” Republican officials have indicated they would split up this year’s meeting across several different locations, clearing the way for smaller cities to make their pitch.

Trump has been sharply critical of North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, announcing last week that the GOP is now “forced” to look for another state to host the Republican National Convention due to social distancing guidelines that would limit event capacity.

“The state’s entire Republican delegation has lobbied Trump to pick Georgia, though the appeal mostly focused on Atlanta’s amenities and experience hosting other large-scale events,” Bluestein writes. Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms strongly opposes the idea, saying that inviting thousands of visitors would defy the city’s “phased, data-driven approach to reopening.”

“We urge Democrats throughout the state to encourage Mayor Johnson to place public health ahead of political stunts by vigorously opposing this ludicrous proposal,” said the board of  Skidaway Island Democrats in a statement.
